ODE TO TIGER

The sun hung low behind the trees
As dusk darkened the sky 'fore night
The cage door swung open
And a magnificent bird stepped into the light

Sharp eyes blinked, proud head swung about
As if in disbelief, And then
Great wings spread as she held him aloft
To catch the evening breeze

Effortlessly he lifted away towards the tallest tree
What a joyous sight
A bird in flight
Who has
Just been
Set FREE.

Tiger was brought to us by a law enforcement officer after responding to a call regarding an owl hanging upside down from a pole. This magnificent bird's leg had been caught in a steel jaw trap and left suspended , upside down for over eight hours. All of the tissue surrounding the exposed bone was shredded;  the bird was obviously in shock; but remarkably there were no fractures. I saw little encouragement that Tiger would ever regain full use of the leg due to the severity of the damage. But thanks to a local surgeon who cared enough to share his time, resources and expertise, Tiger would receive a second chance.

After three months of intense therapy Tiger was released back to his rightful place in nature, with full use of the leg and foot. Thank you Dr. James Doyle, for your expert hands that healed;  And for your gentle hands that calmed.

Tiger and I will be forever grateful!

Note:  The man responsible for Tiger's injuries was fined the maximum allowed by law for injury to a protected species. Our thanks to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agent for following through!
